SMSTS is the abbreviated form of the Site Management Safety Training Scheme. This course builds an excellent foundation for meeting the demands for health and safety management on site. By incorporating good industry practices, and through effective management techniques, you will be able to reduce accidents on site.
This course is ideal for professionals handling managerial tasks on projects. It is also highly beneficial for site engineers, foremen, planners, and quantity surveyors.
The SMSTS qualification is normally a pre-requisite qualification for anyone involved in management activity on a construction site, whilst SSSTS is a pre-requisite qualification for those that supervise the work of others on construction sites.
These industry qualifications are not a legal requirement. Also, this course isn’t equivalent to any specific level of training. However, many workplaces will demand certain personnel, such as site managers, to have completed this qualification as part of their company policy.
The SMSTS course is part of CITB’s site safety plus scheme, while the CSCS scheme is separate. Site managers are expected to have a black manager’s card whilst working on a construction site, as well as an SMSTS qualification.
To get a CSCS black card, you will need a relevant Construction Management/Technical related NVQ/SVQ (level 5, 6, or 7) and pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety, and Environment Test.
The CITB Site Management Safety Certificate expires after five years. In order to remain qualified, certificate holders are required to sit the 2-days SMSTS Refresher course before the expiry date of their SMSTS certificate. This will renew their qualification for a further five years.
