What is a Personal License?
The Personal license is a license issued by a UK council to an individual who has completed the necessary training to ensure they hold all the skills and knowledge required to function effectively while maintaining legal safety standards when working in places such as retail, hospitality or special event industries where the sale of alcohol is taking place.

Personal Licence Application Process
The first step in the personal licence application process is to complete an accredited personal licence qualification. Once you have successfully completed the course and assessment, you’ll then need to apply for a personal licence from your local licensing authority.
To apply for a personal licence, you must:
- be aged 18 or over
- have successfully completed an accredited personal licence qualification
- have no relevant criminal convictions
If you’re applying for a personal licence, you’ll need to provide the following documents:
- a completed application form
- your original personal licence qualification certificate
- two passport-sized photographs of yourself, one of which must be endorsed with a statement confirming that it is a true likeness of you
- a criminal conviction history check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) – you’ll need to provide your DBS certificate number on your application form
If you’re successful, you’ll be issued a personal licence which will be valid for life. You can then apply to work in any licensed premises.
What is a Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS)
Did you know that more than 7000 people die every year in the UK in alcohol-related incidents? Responsible consumption of alcohol can lower this number considerably. To ensure that alcohol is sold and consumed responsibly, the government has made it a legal requirement for the sale of alcohol to be authorised by a Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) who is properly trained in the responsible sale of alcohol and holds a Personal Licence. Since all Licenced Premises are required to have a DPS always present, having a Personal Licence will open new avenues of employment for you.
Do I need to have a Personal License in order to sell alcohol?
Not everyone who makes a sale has to hold a Personal Licence, as long as a Personal Licence Holder has authorised the sale, however it is advisable to have more than one Personal License holder at any given time in cases of emergency because if a personal license holder is unavailable or becomes sick the business will have to stop sales or worse, face legal consequences for not following the law.
It is an offence to knowingly sell alcohol without a personal licence holder and you could be fined up to £20,000 and/or sent to prison for up to 6 months if convicted.
